Social networking has been the next big thing in our economy and some are finding ways to get ahead doing it. I think we all would agree that using the various networks (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter) are fun but how many people are actually being pro-active in marketing themselves for new positions, promotions, or business ventures?
Today a Guest Post from Barry Livingstone, author of The Social Networking Business Plan with Onefineham.
Economic Times Are Tough, But the Tough Are Still Going
This has been one of the longest sustained downturns in the modern era and sadly it seems every switch we seem to throw blows up in our face. What then for the “fellowship of the willing” (to borrow a sad phrase from the failed aspirations of the prior administration) to do in order to stay economically afloat?
Savvy people are using their one unassailable asset, THEIR BRAINS, to figure out their own true value to others, and then marketing themselves using social networks. The unlocking the key to discovering your own true value and earning potential is the first step toward pulling yourself out of the current economic quagmire and start building a new income stream (or streams) for yourself.

I wrote a good (short) free eBook on the topic and built a Facebook group to publicize it. The Social Networking Business Plan group. Basically the notion behind the group is to learn what about ourselves that is valuable, then learn how to market ourselves on social networks in a way to find new jobs, careers, or business opportunities. Join the group and grab the link to the free eBooks page (found on the discussion board in the Facebook group). In the two free eBooks you’ll find a mind map on sources of self discovery and ways to capture (and receive rewards for capturing) more of your own personal value. The second book deals with some of the “dumb” questions involved in using the web to self promote (10 basic skills & tips, plus 5 pitfalls to avoid).
There is no savior coming to rescue our economy. There is not going to be any sudden policy change that is going to instantly make our economic situation any better. We have to be the little economic engines ‘that could’. We have to be eager to learn new skills and compete in the digital marketplace. The good news is that it is fairly easy to learn, and there are abundant free resources for those who join “The Fellowship of the Willing.”
Take Responsibility for Driving Your Own Economic Future
I know times are tough and the economic picture is pretty bleak but you owe it to yourself to grab the free eBooks and start planning your own new economic journey. The sooner you do so, the brighter your own future will be. Using free resources and eBooks is a great way to begin growing your skill set and expanding your mind to new possibilities. As your knowledge and successes grow, spend a little more on acquiring NEW KNOWLEDGE. Remember what we said at the beginning about your one unassailable asset: YOUR BRAIN.
