Work from Home IT Jobs – A New Trend in Software Applications Jobs?

By

Work from home IT jobs are likely to be a high growth occupation in the coming decade as companies work to retain top talent while reducing overall headcount or reducing overall costs.  It is well known that computer software engineers will be in high demand in the foreseeable future but where these opportunities are likely to be filled is in the homes of freelancers or work from home IT professionals.  Security concerns will keep the most sensitive projects in close quarters however outside work such as graphic artists or business website or webmarketing design will increasingly be done by lower cost free-lance professionals either from home or remotely.

Work from home IT jobs are highly desired by those in the field and who are fully aware of the capabilities of telecommuniting.  Software engineers with propriatary skills have held more than one company hostage vis a vis server locations or relocation demands and that trend will continue as more companies, particularly small businesses increasingly rely on automated and web based systems to provide solutions for the businesses.

Having said that, here are a couple of thoughts on what might help you position yourself for one of the future work from home IT jobs sure to be created in the coming few years.

  • Undergraduate Degree in Software Engineering or related field – HR managers don’t typically get paid to take risks.  They take the safe bets and the safe bet for a professional programmer is a degree holder (this won’t apply to free lancers who would be contracted by software engineers themselves… who would be able to judge skills of non-degree holders just fine)
  • Summer Internships while in school – Yeah, you won’t make money and you’ll be getting lots of coffee for people but being INSIDE is a tremendous advantage.  Meeting important people, learning what skills are important (and worth developing) and which skills aren’t.
  • Identify and explore key new opportunities – today, the iphone applications market is VERY hot.  Why?  Because Apple is spending MILLIONS of dollars giving applications developers FREE advertising on the TV because it increases the coolness of their iphone.  Win Win, right?
  • Be a First Mover – Have an idea?  Work it!  One of three outcomes will happen:
  1. You will come up with something novel that works and is saleable
  2. You will come up with something that works but doesn’t make money
  3. You will learn numerous things that don’t work and will have experiences to share
  • Consider developing multi-language web development expertise (Java, PHP, SQL/MySQL,PHP, HTML, XML)
  • Continously add to your library of small but functional software programs for re-use over and over again in new larger applications

The work from home IT jobs many engineers seek do exist but getting them means having the right combination of skills, salesmenship, networking contacts, and portfolio of previous work products.  An undergraduate computer related degree is a must for a corporate job, a huge library of prior work products is critical for the free lancer.  If that means doing stuff just for the purpose of seeing if you can do it… it’s probably going to be worth doing it long term.

Engineering Jobs in todays market are difficult to come by and this is made even more problematic by the fact that future managers are becoming more difficult to satisfy. Personally, I think that the world markets should see substantial improvements within the next twelveyears and this should make the situation easier to manage.
